CO2-Performance ladder - Development 2024

CO2-Performance ladder

Sustainability is one of AVZ-Group's strategic pillars. In order to achieve set goals, AVZ-Group works with the CO2 Performance Ladder. This CO2 management system ensures that ambitions, the reduction of CO2 emissions and continuous improvement are tested annually.

The CO2 Performance Ladder is a CO2 management system consisting of 5 levels. Up to level 3, an organisation deals with its own organisation's emissions (and all projects). From levels 4 and 5 onwards, work is also done on CO2 emissions in the chain and sector. A certified organisation meets the requirements of the CO2 Performance Ladder at a certain level (and all underlying levels). These requirements stem from four perspectives:

A- Insight: Determining energy flows and the CO2 footprint;
B- Reduction: Developing ambitious targets for CO2 reduction;
C- Transparency: Structural communication about the CO2 policy;
D- Participation: Participation in industry initiatives on CO2 reduction.

Energy policy

In 2021, AVZ-Group started mapping its CO2 footprint with the underlying aim of reducing it. The reduction will be achieved through the reduction system in accordance with CO2 Performance Ladder 3.1. This report highlights the components of insight, reduction, communication and participation in initiatives.

Energy consumption 2023

Every year, emissions are mapped to gain insight into the CO2 footprint. In 2021, the baseline measurement to map the AVZ Group's total CO2 emissions was 941.3 tonnes of CO2 in that year. In 2022, CO2 emissions were 966.2. If nothing else, reason enough to quickly start implementing CO2-reducing measures. In fact, AVZ-Group has set a target to emit 49% less CO2 in 2025 compared to the year 2021. In 2022, a small increase in CO2 emissions was visible because an extra building was rented for Smits for the production of outdoor living products.

In 2023, CO2 emissions went down significantly: from 941.3 to 493.9 tonnes. This represents a 47% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to 2021. The target was thus almost achieved. Important steps included switching to Dutch green electricity and electrifying the vehicle fleet.

Ambition 2025

We aim to achieve this CO2 emissions reduction through identified measures such as:

1. The installation of smart thermostat controls
2. Replacing fluorescent lighting with LED lighting in hall Van Schaijk (Smits)
3. Counteracting heat loss in warehouses and production halls (AVZ and Hylas)
4. Investigation into the installation of solar panels in connection with the roof construction (AVZ)
5. Replacement of heaters (Hylas)
6. Internal communication on awareness and behaviour

Individual contribution

Achieving the new CO2 reduction target is supported by all colleagues. Enjoying working together is one of the core values within AVZ-Group and that includes making an individual contribution to achieving the new target.
